First-Time Safari Magic in the Okavango Delta

If someone had told me before this trip that a place could feel alive in silence, I wouldn’t have understood until I experienced Botswana. Our 7 night Okavango Delta Safari was my first trip to Africa, and it was everything I dreamed it would be, and more!

We began our journey in Maun, collected from the airport and flown by light aircraft into the heart of the Delta with its water channels, woodlands and floodplains. Touching down in the Okavango Delta felt like entering another world, where the colours were richer, the light softer, and the sounds deeper than anywhere I’ve been before. From the moment we set off on our first game drive, the wildlife encounters came thick and fast. Herds of elephants wandered through the reeds as if they owned every inch of mud and grass. We spotted buffalo lying near the water’s edge, giraffes stretching out their black tongues to reach the leaves, and lions sleeping in the shade as the afternoon heat kicked in.

One morning, we traded wheels for water and drifted through narrow waterways in mokoros, these are traditional dugout canoes, propelled silently by expert guides. There’s a very special feeling traveling silently along the water and a closeness to nature that no vehicle can match. Returning to camp each evening, we shared laughter over sundowners and swapped stories beneath a sky so vast and full of stars it made you feel so small.

For anyone considering a first safari, this Okavango experience is a perfect introduction, raw, magical, and utterly unforgettable.
